What are the psychological effects of being in the countryside?

How many of you out there in the midst of our globalised existence truly find bliss where or how you live? Country life is a catalyst for change as it allows us to experience spiritual and mental lucidity, which in turn enables us to keep a proper and positive perspective on life. There is no rush after all, nature does not work at speed, there is a time for everything.

City life does excite, of course it does and we at Opening Space Retreat know this only too well. We were both once active participants in urban life but now we have made the leap to a country existence, one we were born to.

We recognise that the bustling cityscape with its entertainments and its effervescence is appealing. However, research has shown that those brought up or living in urban areas are more prone to anxiety, depression and even schizophrenia. Despite millions of years of human development, psychologists affirm, humans have not yet developed coping strategies to deal with living amongst thousands or millions of others.

The lure of the country is encapsulated in its ability to calm us, to re-charge our batteries and to maintain our overall health. The wide open spaces allow us the time to look within, to register our inner frenetic self and to begin to actualise change and improved mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health.

Of course many people feel that they have no choice but to be in the city, making money and being successful. However, Opening Space Retreat is a perfect place to find some short-term yet powerful respite and recharging, it is deeply rural and yet accessible to most places by air, sea, train and road.
